The class 62 was developed and delivered by the company Henschel for the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft in the 1920s. The locomotives were two-cylinder hot steam locomotives and 15 units were assembled. Although the locomotives were built as early as 1928, the Deutsche Reichsbahn had the class 62 003 to 015 delivered not until 1932. The reasons for this were the low demand and the too high price for the locomotives.
After the Second World War, seven locomotives remained with the Deutsche Bundesbahn. The DR withdrew class 62 from service by 1956.
